An extended guide to selecting your first radio controlled vehicle

Your journey into the radio controlled hobby begins with this simple question and all the other questions that go with it: What's the fastest? What's the most durable? Kit or RTR (Ready to Run?) Should I go with onroad or offoad, and which is more fun? What's a good basher, and what's a good racer? Should I get a micro, mini, 1/18 scale, 1/10 scale, 1/5 scale, buggy, truck, monster truck or dragster? What's the easiest to maintain, and most importantly for most of us, how cheaply can I get into it?

Ultimately your decision will be based on what you want out of the hobby. The scope of this article is to present some guidelines about various aspects of radio controlled cars, trucks, buggies, monster trucks, and other R/C's so you can make an informed decision on on your own, and know that you made the right choice.

Let's begin with a look at Toy vs. Hobby Grade vehicles, and how to determine which is which.
